| Journalist and drama critic, born in Melrose, Massachusetts, USA. He was the erudite, highly influential theatre critic for the New York Times for over 30 years (1925–42, 1946–60). After a wartime assignment as Times correspondent in China and the Soviet Union, he was awarded a 1947 Pulitzer Prize for reporting. |
