| Journalist and US senator, born in Oakdale, New York, USA. Working as a journalist, he used his Santa Fe, NM newspaper to crusade for progressive causes. Appointed to the US Senate in 1927 (Republican, New Mexico), he served until his untimely death in 1935, and won a reputation as a supporter of the New Deal and independence for the Philippines. |
