| Writer, born in Belfast, NE Northern Ireland, UK. After World War 2 he became a journalist and adopted Canadian citizenship. He spent time in New York before moving to California. He was particularly admired for his portrayal of women, as seen in The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (1955, filmed 1987). The Great Victorian Collection (1975) was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and both The Doctor's Wife (1976) and Black Robe (1985) were short-listed for the Booker Prize. Later books include The Colour of Blood (1987), No Other Life (1993), The Statement (1995), and The Magician's Wife (1998). The play Lies of Silence (1990, filmed 1991) is an exile's view of the troubles in Northern Ireland. |
