biography: Physicist, born in Cardiff, S Wales, UK. He studied at Cambridge, was elected a fellow of Trinity College (1962), and became professor of physics from 1974. While a research student (1962) he deduced theoretically what is now called the Josephson effect at the junction of two superconductors, and for which he shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics. His subsequent research interests include paranormal phenomena and the theory of intelligence.
