| biography:
| Abbot and traveller, born in Tralee, SW Ireland, traditionally the founder of the monastery of Clonfert in Co Galway (561), and other monasteries in Ireland and Scotland. The Latin Navigation of St Brendan (7th–8th-c) recounts his legendary voyage to a land of saints far to the W and N, possibly the Northern Isles, Iceland, or even N America. He should not be confused with another Irish saint and a contemporary - St Brendan, abbot of Birr. Feast day 16 May. |
