| biography:
| US soldier and businessman, born in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. He trained at West Point (1914), and as an army engineer he worked on various projects including some in France during World War 1. On detached duty as chief of the Works Progress Administration in New York City (1936–40), he supervised construction of La Guardia Field. During World War 2 he headed the army's Services of Supply, and after retiring (1946) he became president of the Koppers Co. |
