| Dutch politician and Burgomaster of Rotterdam, born in Haarlem, W Netherlands. After an academic career in which he acted as government adviser on several occasions, he became a Crown member of the Socio-Economic Council and in 1982 was appointed Burgomaster of Rotterdam. As such he also became chairman of the advisory body of the Rhine Estuary municipalities (Overlegorgaan Rijnmondgemeente). He completed the redevelopment of Rotterdam, which had been badly bombed during World War 2. |
