| biography:
| World heavyweight champion boxer, born in New York City, USA. He was defeated in a light-heavyweight contest in 1929 and seemed destined for oblivion, especially after breaking both hands in a fight in 1933. But he fought his way back, and shocked the boxing world when he defeated Max Baer (1909–59) on points for the world heavyweight title in 1935 - a comeback that earned him his nickname. He lost the title in 1937 to Joe Louis. |
