biography: Journalist, novelist, and television writer, born in The Hague, W Netherlands. He made his debut as a poet with Nogal droevige liedjes voor de kleine Gijs (1976, Rather Sad Songs for Little Gijs) and his first novel was De blauwe salon (1981, The Blue Parlour). His most popular work is De kleine blonde dood (1985, Small Blond Death), a touching novel about the way a father deals with the death of his son. Recurring themes in his work are death, love, and longing. In his writing and in his television programmes he enthusiastically conveyed his love for pop music, literature, and travelling.
