| biography:
| Writer, born in Naumburg, Germany. He was a journalist and critic for the periodical Theater heute (1971–5), then resident playwright at the Berlin theatre Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer. His plays number among the most performed of any contemporary German-speaking playwright, and include Die Hypochonder (1971), the comedy Bekannte Gesichter, gemischte Gefühle (1974), and Trilogie des Wiedersehens (1976), which explores the themes of isolation and alienation and their effect on the individual. He has become a significant literary figure through his prose and poetry writing, notably the short story Die Widmung (1977), Rumor (1980), and Die Fremdenführerin (1986). He wrote the script for Peter Stein's film Sommergäste, and is a notable literary critic. In 1989 he was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis. |
