| Baseball player, born in Carolina, Puerto Rico. An outstanding outfielder, he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for 17 years (1955–72), making more than 3000 hits and 240 home runs. He led the National League in batting four times, and was in the World Series in 1971. He was killed in an air-crash while flying on a relief mission to the victims of the earthquake at Managua in Nicaragua, and in 1973 was immediately elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame without the usual five-year wait. |
