| biography:
| Hungarian statesman and regent (1920–44), born in Kenderes, NEC Hungary. He commanded the Austro-Hungarian fleet (1918), and was minister of war in the counter-revolutionary ‘White government’ (1919), opposing Bela Kun's Communist regime, which he suppressed (1920). He became regent, presiding over a resolutely conservative, authoritarian regime. In World War 2 he supported the Axis Powers until Hungary was overrun by the Germans in 1944. He was imprisoned by the Germans, released by the Allies in 1945, and went to live in Estoril, Portugal. |
