| German politcian, born in Lübeck, N Germany. A member of the Soczialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), he became Bundesminister für Bildung und Wissenschaft (1981–2), Ministerpräsident of Schleswig-Holstein (1988–93), and party leader (1991–3). He resigned from office in 1993 because of a false statement in the Barschel Affair. |
