| biography:
| US soldier, born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, USA. The son of Irish immigrants, he trained at West Point (1891) and served with distinction in the Spanish-American War. Taken by General Pershing to France (1917), he became the first American soldier since Stonewall Jackson to lead in combat successively a regiment, brigade, division, and corps. He later served a term as army chief-of-staff (1924–26). |
