| Cricket umpire, born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. He played county cricket for Yorkshire (1956–9) and Leicestershire (1960–4) before establishing himself as a popular and respected umpire. During his career he umpired many major events, including 68 Test matches, 92 one-day internationals, 159 international matches (all world records), and a record three World Cup Finals (1975, 1979, 1983), retiring as a Test umpire in 1996 and leaving the first-class list in 1998. His books include From The Pavilion End (1988) and an autobiography that in 1998 was the best-selling hardback book in the history of British publishing. |
