| biography:
| Cardinal and politician, born in Pouget, SE France. He was sent to Italy as a papal legate by his uncle, Pope John XXII (1319), to restore the Papal States. At first he was successful, defeating the Viscontis in 1327, but he was defeated at Ferrara (1333) by a league of Italian rulers. He returned to Avignon, where he retired. |
