| US representative, born in Colton, New York, USA. A graduate of Amherst College, he started working as a lumberjack (1894), becoming the owner of his own lumber company by 1904, before diversifying into other businesses. In the US House of Representatives (Republican, New York, 1915–39), he chaired the House Rules Committee in the 1920s, often frustrating the Democrats. As minority leader during the 1930s, he fought against the New Deal. Afterwards he ran the Potsdam Courier-Freeman in New York. |
