| Revolutionary and regicide, born in Tarbes, S France. He was originally a moderate in the National Convention, but later helped form the Committee of Public Safety, which he defended with great eloquence. After the fall of Robespierre (1794) he was imprisoned, but escaped. He served under Napoleon, was later exiled at the Restoration, but returned to Paris under an amnesty in 1830. |
