| biography:
| Baseball player and coach, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. He played with the New York Yankees (1946–63), including 14 World Series (a record). He also set the record for most World Series hits (71), and for most home runs by a catcher in the American League (313). After winning three Most Valuable Player awards (in five seasons), he went on to manage and coach the Yankees, then did the same for their arch-rivals, the New York Mets. In 1986 he went on to coach the Houston Astros. His comment that ‘It ain't over ’til it's over’ has become part of the game's legend. |
