| biography:
| Astronomer, born in Naissaar, N Estonia. He studied at an engineering school in Mittweida, Germany, where he remained until 1926, helping to install a small observatory. He became a staff member at Hamburg observatory (1926), and in 1930 devised a new optical system for reflecting telescopes which overcame previous problems of aberration of the image, and which is now widely used in astronomy. |
