| biography:
| Physicist, born in Frankfurt, WC Germany. He studied at Rome University and the Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich, before moving to the USA in 1947. After a period with Bell Telephones, he was appointed professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. In his search for new superconducting materials, he discovered that alloys of metals with five or seven valence electrons were the most effective. His work was a useful advance in the period before ceramic superconductors were found in the late 1980s. |
