| Catalan chronicler writing between 1283 and 1288, the earliest of the four great Catalan chroniclers, and a contemporary of Ramon Llull. His best work is the Llibre del rei En Pere d'Aragó e dels seus antecessors passats. The history begins in the reign of Berenguer IV (1131–62) but passes briefly over the intervening years, concentrating on the reign of Pere II (1276–86), and especially on the Catalan-Aragonese intervention in S Italy and France's unsuccessful invasion of Catalunya. Desclot stops short of hagiography, indicating Pere's failings and blaming him for atrocities committed against the French. Facts interest him more than their interpretation, and his Aragonese successor Zurita praises his discriminating use of documents. |
