biography: Protestant reformer, born in Siena, C Italy. He changed from the Franciscans to the Capuchins (1534), becoming vicar-general of the order after four years. Summoned to Rome to answer for evangelical tendencies (1542), he fled to Calvin in Geneva. In 1545 he became preacher to the Italians in Augsburg. Invited to England, he was pastor to the Italian exiles and a prebend in Canterbury. At Mary I's accession (1553) he fled to Switzerland, but the publication of Thirty Dialogues led to his being banished.
