| Composer, born in London, UK. He was a teacher of composition at the Royal College of Music (1948–81). His first work to achieve recognition was the Symphony of Liberation (1946, Daily Express Prize), and his subsequent output included a further symphony, an opera The Shadow of the Glen (1978–9), concertos for piano, violin, and cello, two string quartets, and other chamber, choral, and instrumental pieces. |
