| biography:
| Jesuit priest, explorer, and photographer, born in San Francisco, California, USA. Called the ‘Glacier Priest’, between 1927 and the mid-1950s he made countless expeditions to Alaska. He led the first winter ascent of Mt Karmai (1932) and lived with Eskimos on King I (1937–8). His lectures, writings, and photography introduced the little-known territory of Alaska to Americans. |
