| biography:
| Studio potter, born in Hong Kong. He studied at the Slade School of Art, London, and went to Japan at the age of 21. There he took up pottery, becoming the sole pupil of Ogata Kenzan (1911–19). He returned to England in 1920, where with Shoji Hamada he established the Leach pottery at St Ives in Cornwall, where he made earthenware and stoneware. He played a crucial role in promoting handmade pottery which could be appreciated as art. From 1932, he taught at Dartington Hall, Devon. His written works include A Potter's Book (1940) and A Potter's Work (1967). He was made a Companion of Honour in 1973. |
