| Conductor, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and was an orchestral violinist before becoming second conductor of The Netherlands Radio Union (1955). He was later conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra (from 1961) and of the London Philharmonic (1967–79), and was appointed musical director at Glyndebourne (1978–88), and Covent Garden (1988–2002), he is also principal guest conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1995– ). He was granted an honorary knighthood in 1977, and was made an honorary Companion of Honour in 2002. |
