| Novelist and journalist, born in Lons-le-Saunier, E France. After various odd jobs he became a journalist on the Progrès de Lyon, where he published L'Ouvrier de la nuit about his failed attempts to publish his novels. Finally, Vorgine (1957) re-titled Pirates du Rhône (1970) and Qui m'emporte, re-titled Tonnerre de Dieu, attracted public attention. Les Fruits de l'hiver brought him fame and the Prix Goncourt in 1965, of which he became a member from 1971 until his startling resignation in 1977. A number of his novels were adapted for television and the cinema. |
