| biography:
| Northern Irish political activist, brought up in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, SC Northern Ireland, UK. She studied at Queen's University, Belfast, and became the youngest MP in the House of Commons since William Pitt when she was elected as an Independent Unity candidate in 1969. Her aggressive political style led to her arrest while leading Catholic rioters in the Bogside, and she was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. In 1971 she lost Catholic support when she gave birth to an illegitimate child; she married two years later and was defeated in the 1974 general election. She was a co-founder of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, and remains an active community and human rights activist in Co Tyrone. |
