| biography:
| Marquis of Ivrea and King of Italy. He was an adviser to Lothar II, and at his death was crowned King of Italy (950). He was opposed by Otto I, who had himself crowned King of Italy, but who then recognized Berengario as king (952). The hostility of the feudal lords, the pope, and Adelaide (Otto's wife) caused Otto to intervene again in 961. Berengario was finally defeated in 964 and died in exile. |
