| biography:
| King of Italy (950–2), the grandson of Berengar I. In 951 he took captive Adelaide, the widow of Lothar II of Italy, who had refused to marry Berengar's son, Adalbert, but she was rescued by Otto I who made Berengar his vassal. From 960 Berengar attacked Pope John XII, on whose appeal Otto marched into Rome and was crowned emperor (962). He imprisoned Berengar in Bamberg, Germany, where he died. |
