| King of Italy (931–50), who co-ruled (931–47) with his father, Hugh of Arles. Harassed by the powerful Berengar II of Ivrea, Hugh fled to Provence, where he died in 947. That same year Lothar married Adelaide, the 16-year old daughter of Rudolf II of Burgundy, in the hope of strengthening his position, but instead became only a figurehead, while Berengar exerted control. Lothar died in 950, possibly poisoned by Berengar. |
