| Holy Roman Empress, a daughter of Rudolf II of Burgundy. She married Lothar II of Italy in 947. After his death in 950 she was imprisoned by his successor, Berengar II, but was rescued by King Otto I of Germany, who married her as his second wife in 951. They were crowned emperor and empress in 962. Their son was Otto II. As queen mother, she exercised considerable influence. She became joint regent for her grandson, Otto III, and then sole regent (991–6). Thereafter she retired to a convent in Alsace. Feast day 16 December. |
