She belonged to the group around E du Perron, and made her debut in 1930 with the novel De vriend (The Friend). Throughout her entire body of work, she incorporates her experiences in Indonesia in a sober but psychologically perceptive way. In addition to novels and short stories, she published two travel stories and the popular success Groot Indonesisch kookboek (1983, Big Indonesian Cookery Book).
