| Writer, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. She left for The Netherlands East Indies in 1929 and took Indonesian nationality in 1950. She belonged to the group around E du Perron, and made her debut in 1930 with the novel De vriend (The Friend). Throughout her entire body of work, she incorporates her experiences in Indonesia in a sober but psychologically perceptive way. In addition to novels and short stories, she published two travel stories and the popular success Groot Indonesisch kookboek (1983, Big Indonesian Cookery Book). In 1973 she was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs. |
