In 1955 he joined the guerrillas who were fighting for independence as part of the National Liberation Front (FLN). Under Houari Boumédienne, defence minister in Ben Bella's government, he was military commander of Algiers, and when Boumédienne overthrew Ben Bella in 1965 he joined the Revolutionary Council.
