| Algerian soldier and president (1978–92), born in Sebaa, Algeria. In 1955 he joined the guerrillas who were fighting for independence as part of the National Liberation Front (FLN). Under Houari Boumédienne, defence minister in Ben Bella's government, he was military commander of Algiers, and when Boumédienne overthrew Ben Bella in 1965 he joined the Revolutionary Council. He succeeded Boumédienne as secretary-general of the FLN and president, but was forced to resign by the army in 1992. |
