| Athlete, born in Kenya. In the high-altitude conditions of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, he helped his team mate, Kip Keino, win the 1500 m title after running the first lap in 56 seconds. He emerged as a top-class runner ,taking silver in the steeplechase at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and the 1972 Olympics. In 1973 he set three world records for the 3000 m steeplechase - 8:20·2 s at Lagos, and 8:19·8 s and 8:14·0 s at Helsinki. At the Commonwealth Games in 1974 he won gold medals for the 5000 m and the steeplchase, and took the bronze in the 1500 m event. |
