| Trade union leader, born in Bristol, SW England, UK. He worked as a brickmaker, bootmaker, and sailor, and achieved prominence as leader of the great dockers' strike (1889), and of the transport workers' strike in London (1911). He later became a Labour MP (1917–24, 1929–31). |
