| Educationist and pioneer of shorthand in the USA, born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, S England, UK, the brother of Sir Isaac Pitman. In 1852 he was sent to the USA by his brother to teach his shorthand system there, and he established the Phonographic Institute in Cincinnati (1853). He invented an electrochemical process of relief engraving (1855), and taught at Cincinnati Art School from 1873. |
