| Israeli statesman and Labour prime minister (1999–2001), born in Kibbutz Mishmar Hasharon, C Israel. Educated in Jerusalem and Stanford University, USA, he joined the Israeli army in 1959 and saw active service in both the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, becoming a major-general in 1982. In 1991 he was appointed chief of the general staff and, following the signing of the Gaza–Jericho agreement with the Palestinians, he oversaw the Israeli Defence Force's redeployment in those areas. He served as minister of the interior (1995) and minister of foreign affairs (1995–6), being elected to the Knesset in 1996. As prime minister, he retained the defence portfolio to himself. |
