| Israeli politician and prime minister (1996–9), born in Tel Aviv, W Israel. His family moved to the USA when he was a child, and he was educated at Harvard and MIT. He joined the Israeli embassy in Washington, became Israel's ambassador to the UN, and was elected to the Israeli parliament in 1988, becoming leader of the Likud Party in 1993. A hard-liner on security issues, he campaigned on a platform of peace with security, and defeated Shimon Peres by a narrow margin in the 1996 elections. He was succeeded in 1999 by Ehud Barak. |
