| Journalist and civil rights leader, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. He edited an African-American weekly, the St Paul Appeal, before joining the staff of the Kansas City Call, a leading black weekly. In 1931 he served as executive assistant secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, became editor of the organization's newspaper, Crisis (1934–49), and was then appointed as executive secretary, retiring in 1977. He was considered one of the most articulate spokesmen for the more moderate wing of the civil rights movement. |
