| Anthropologist and archaeologist, born in Rochester, New York, USA. He held undergraduate and graduate degrees from Yale, where he taught (1939–84) and was associated (1934–85) with the Peabody Museum. A leading archaeologist of the Caribbean and Venezuela, he made important theoretical contributions to the problems of classifying and interpreting artifacts. |
