| Bushranger, born in New South Wales, SE Australia. After arrest in 1862 in connection with a robbery, then acquittal, he was deserted by his wife and young son. He joined the Gardiner gang to rob a bullion coach, was arrested, but released again. Returning home, he discovered it burned down by the police and all his cattle killed. He was now committed to a life of outlawry, and a series of audacious exploits followed, which engaged the sympathies of the locals. However, after the needless shooting of a constable by one of the gang, he decided to change his ways. He retired to a secluded camp, but was betrayed by a companion and died in a hail of police bullets at the age of 28. |
