| Lawyer, general, and congressman, born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, USA. He studied at Waterville College, ME, and was admitted to the bar in 1840, becoming noted as a criminal lawyer, a champion of the working-classes, and an ardent Democrat. In 1861 he was appointed major-general of volunteers, took possession of New Orleans (1862), and made an expedition against Fort Fisher (1864). Elected to Congress in 1866, he was prominent in the Republican efforts for the reconstruction of the Southern states and the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. |
