| biography:
| Australian colonist, born at Merton Hall, near Newton Stewart, Dumfries and Galloway, SW Scotland, UK. He arrived in Hobson's Bay in 1842, and became one of the largest and most powerful squatters in SE New South Wales. He spent a fortune trying to found ‘Boyd Town’ as a commercial port. When the enterprise failed, he sailed off in 1849 to join the Gold Rush in California. |
