| biography:
| Galician novelist, historian, and journalist, born in El Ferrol, Galicia, NW Spain. His painstaking Historia de Galicia (7 vols, 1863–73) did much to help the rediscovery of Galician cultural autonomy in the second half of the 19th-c, as did his colourful novels, which were influenced by Sir Walter Scott, and his journalism for El Clamor de Galicia and the Revista Galaica. Among his novels are El caballero verde (1844), Los hidalgos de Monforte (1857), Rojín Rojal, o el paje de los cabellos de oro (1857), Los reyes suevos de Galicia (1860), El caballero de Calatrava (1863), and El último Roade (1868). |
