| biography:
| Pope (1914–22), born in Pegli, Sardinia, Italy. He studied at the University of Genoa, and the Collegia Capranica in Rome, and was ordained in 1878. He became secretary to the Papal Embassy, Spain, in 1883, then secretary to Cardinal Rampolla, bishop (1900), Archbishop of Bologna (1907), and cardinal (May, 1914). Although a junior cardinal, he was elected to succeed Pius X in September 1914, soon after the outbreak of World War 1. He made repeated efforts to end the war, and organized war relief on a munificent scale. |
