| biography:
| Italian patriot and politician, born in Pizzo di Calabria, Calabria, S Italy. He founded the association Figlioli della Giovine Italia (Sons of the Young Italy) in 1832 and became a deputy of the Neapolitan parliament in 1848. He was sentenced to death in his absence for his role in the 1848 Calabria rising. Active in the Roman Republic's defence, he joined Garibaldi's troops when they freed Calabria in 1860. He became a deputy of the left, then a senator in the new Italian parliament. |
