| Italian patriot, politician, and prime minister (1878, 1879–81), born in Pavia, Lombardy, N Italy. A follower of Mazzini, he took part in the 1st and 2nd Independence wars and in the Expedition of the Thousand with Garibaldi. A deputy of the left (1860–70), he became prime minister (1878), but his ‘clean hands’ policy against expansionism caused him to resign after the Berlin Congress. He was prime minister again from 1879 to 1881. Four of his brothers - Ernesto, Luigi, Enrico, and Giovanni - died in the Italian Independence wars. |
