| Railroad executive and lawyer, born in Wausau, Wisconsin, USA. He had a 20-year law career in private practice and government service in Chicago, Washington, and Algiers before reviving the fortunes of the Chicago & North Western Railway Co. As chairman and chief executive officer (1956–72), he streamlined and modernized its Chicago commuter lines. He was also founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Northwest Industries (1968–85). |
